How long does it take to clean air ducts?

Most Central Florida homes are finished in a single visit — but the size of the system, the number of returns and how long it has been since the last clean all change the answer.
It is the first thing almost everyone asks when they call us, and the honest answer is that it depends on the house. How long does air duct cleaning take? For a typical single-system Central Florida home, plan on two to four hours from the van pulling up to the last vent going back on the wall.
What exactly is air duct cleaning and how long does it take?
If you have a heating or cooling system, you have ducts running throughout your business or house. The HVAC system is a closed system which pulls air from inside the home or business, cools the air, and then distributes the cooled air throughout. Air duct cleaning is just like any other home maintenance process, similar to cleaning out your dryer vent. If you let it go too long, it can become a much bigger issue.
The air duct cleaning process will start with putting the system under negative pressure and blocking the coil off to ensure nothing is pulled through it. Putting the system under negative pressure with HEPA filtered equipment is vital to ensure no dust or debris can be distributed throughout the home or business. Once the system is under negative pressure the ductwork is cleaned using compressed air and whips that snake through the ductwork to knock the dust free from the walls of the ducts. Sanitation is used on non-porous surfaces after the surface has been cleaned. The sanitation is an odor eliminator and helps prevent microbial growth.
How often should the duct system be cleaned?
Generally we recommend cleaning air ducts every three to five years. If you have pets, a lot of foot traffic through the home or business, renovating or remodeling, it may be necessary to clean the ductwork more often. Cleaning the air ducts would be beneficial if purchasing a home or business that has dirty ducts from not being properly maintained. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends to inspect residential properties once every two years, commercial business properties are to be inspected once annually.
How long should it take to clean the air ducts in a residential home?
A proper air duct cleaning should take an estimate of two to four hours to clean the entire duct system. Normally there will be two technicians depending on the size of the home. Another factor that may affect the amount of time it takes to clean the ducts is how dirty the ductwork is.
Is there chemicals used during the process of duct cleaning?
During the process of source removal, the ductwork is cleaned of dust and debris. Once the air ducts have been cleaned the sanitation process can then be performed. Sanitation helps remove odors, as well as kills and prevents a percentage of microbial growth.
How long does air duct cleaning take in a Central Florida home?
In practice, the size of the system is what decides it. A two-bedroom home with one air handler and eight or nine supply vents is usually a two-hour job. A four-bedroom house with two systems, twin returns and a long attic trunk line can run to five. Homes that have never been cleaned take longer than homes on a regular schedule, because there is simply more to remove.
The method matters as much as the house. Source removal — putting the whole system under negative pressure and then brushing each run so the debris has nowhere to go but into the machine — takes longer than pushing a vacuum hose into a vent, and it is the only approach that actually empties the duct. How long does air duct cleaning take for an average Florida home?
Two to four hours for a single-system home with eight to twelve vents. Larger homes with two air handlers usually run four to five hours, and we tell you which bracket you are in before we start.
Do I need to be home for the whole appointment?
Someone needs to let the crew in and be there at the end to walk the job with them, but you do not have to follow us around. Most customers carry on with their day while we work.
Why do some companies say they can do it in 45 minutes?
Because they are vacuuming the vent openings rather than cleaning the ducts. Proper source removal needs the system sealed, put under negative pressure and each run brushed out, and that cannot be done in under an hour.
Does the house need to be empty of furniture?
No. We need clear access to each supply vent and to the return and air handler, so moving a chair or two helps, but nothing has to be emptied out or covered up.
Will the job take longer if the ducts have never been cleaned?
Usually yes, by an hour or so. Twenty years of accumulation takes more passes to remove than a system that was last done four years ago, and we would rather take the extra time than leave half of it in there.
