Burning wood leaves soot and creosote on the inside of the chimney. Creosote is black or brown, it sticks to the walls of the flue, and it is highly flammable. A chimney fire is creosote igniting inside the flue.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys be inspected at least once a year and cleaned as needed. How often cleaning is needed depends on how much the fireplace is used, what is burned and the condition of the chimney.

Our Chimney Cleaning Process
We protect the hearth and the room, then clean the firebox, the damper area and the accessible flue with chimney brushes and rods, collecting the soot and creosote with a vacuum as it comes loose.
The approach depends on the type of fireplace and how the chimney can be reached. While we clean, we look over the accessible parts of the system and note anything that needs attention.
How the chimney cleaning process works
1. Look at the fireplace
We check the type of fireplace and the accessible parts of the chimney before starting.
2. Protect the room
Drop cloths go down around the hearth and a vacuum is set up at the firebox.
3. Clean the firebox
Ash, soot and loose creosote are removed from the firebox and the damper area.
4. Sweep the flue
Chimney brushes are worked through the accessible flue to loosen soot and creosote.
5. Collect the debris
The vacuum collects what comes loose so it does not spread into the room.
6. Review what we found
We clean up and tell you about anything that may need further cleaning, maintenance or repair.
